| Pinelands Preservation Alliance gives presentations about the Pinelands throughout the state and region. Listed here are presentations we are giving at public libraries. These are all open to the general public, so please join us for one of these programs to learn about the celebrate the Pinelands!
PPA staff and volunteers are also available to give programs for your organization, community or agency. Here are the programs we offer, but note that we can also create a program that suits your needs or interests: A visual powerpoint presentation that gives an overview of the Pinelands and its distinctive Pine Barrens ecosystem. We discuss the geology and natural history of the region, then turn to the remarkable efforts of our state and federal governments, and the work of thousands of citizens, to protect the Pinelands through the nation's foremost "smart growth" plan - the Pinelands Comprehensive Management Plan. Tthis presentaton includes showing our nature film, The Pine Barrens: up close and natural. This is the first nature film about the New Jersey Pine Barrens and provides a breathtaking introduction to the region's fascinating natural history, plants and wildlife. The film is 30 minutes long. The showing of the film is followed by discussion of the ecology of the region and efforts to protect its forests, streams and wetlands. The streams, wetlands and aquifers of the Pinelands are the "green infrastructure" without which the ecosystem would die, agriculture would become impossible, and millions of residents and tourists would lose their water supply. This presentation illustrates the region's water resources and explains how the distinctive nature of Pine Barrens waters sustains the unusual plant and animal communities of this extraordinary ecosystem. The talk focuses on the threats our water resources face today from human exploitation and contamination, and discusses the ways New Jersey and its citizens can protect Pinelands waters to serve both the natural landscape and sustainable human uses. Threatened and Endangered Species of the New Jersey Pine Barrens This presentation by PPA staff naturalist Russell Juelg focuses on the animal and plant species that occur in the Pinelands National Reserve and have legal protections because of their great rarity. The presentation includes outstanding color images of the animals with their respective range maps, as well as the 54 plant species protected under the Pinelands Comprehensive Management Plan. The talk includes an introduction to the legal protections that are in effect for these plants and animals and their habitats, tips on identifying them and suggestions on the many ways we can help protect and restore their habitats and populations. The Pinelands: A Region at Risk? This presentation begins with showing PPA's 30-minute documentary, The Pinelands: A Region at Risk? The documentary was produced by PPA and Caucus New Jersey. The film provides an engaging entrée to the history and environment of the region and focuses on the competing interests and policies at stake in efforts to protect the Pinelands from excessive development. The film also provides an excellent introduction to conversation and debate about the Pinelands and its future. |
