We'll get acquainted with this incredibly important and diverse Kingdom and the indispensible ways fungi function in our ecosystems. Be prepared for some short hikes at the Rutgers University Pinelands Field Station. We'll search for mushrooms and take them into the lab for microscopic examination and identification. Bring lunch and a hand lens, if you have one. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

Ghost Town Tour with Barbara Solem-Stull - Saturday, December 4, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Join author Barbara Solem-Stull on an all-day tour of some of the Pine Barrens' most interesting and scenic ghost towns. After a short slide presentation and overview, Barbara will lead the group through the heart of the Pines stopping at Apple Pie Hill, Chatsworth, Pasadena, Speedwell, Harrisville, Martha and Hermann. At each of these stops, Barbara will share the history of the old town as the group explores the site.

Look for these programs in the spring:

Dune Walk with Angela Contillo Anderson - Explore the beachfront with an expert eye. Discuss the function and purpose of barrier islands. Dissect the dune and find out how it is created and stabilized. Build your own dune and see how it works or does not. Learn the impacts and influences that the beach and pinelands have on each other. Aquatic and avian species will be identified and observed. Seashore beach picnic included. Bring beach chair, towel and other iems to enjoy the beach at your leisure after lunch. Any age welcome.

Kayak Back Bay Tour with Angela Contillo Anderson - Explore the salt marsh ecosystem by kayak. The tour will begin at the Tuckerton Seaport Museum, and registration will include admission to the Seaport Musuem.

Underground Secrets with Dr. Lena Jonnson - Examine the hidden world of soils and the myriad organisms that inhabit this world, while learning how the life above ground could not persist without the complex processes taking place within the soil.
