On any roadside and within any open or semi-open upland area in the Pine Barrens you are likely to find Pennsylvania Sedge, and very often it is the dominant ground cover. The ecological importance of this plant cannot be overstated. It colonizes disturbed soil and thus plays a key role in the process of succession. It is particularly important to nesting Northern Pine Snake, its rhizomes providing a tough and durable network just below the surface, which stabilizes the “roof” of the nest chambers.
