April 27 - Crash: A Tale of Two Species
Description: The movie, first shown on PBS, is a story of the fabric of life, and how every species in interconnected. Each year, a small shorebird that winters on the southern tip of South America must make a 10,000-mile journey to its nesting grounds in the Arctic - one of the longest migrations on Earth. The pocket-sized long distance traveler times its migration precisely to coincide with the annual spawning of one of Earth's most ancient creatures, the horseshoe crab. This humble crab has remained virtually unchanged for 350 million years or since before the age of the dinosaurs. Horseshoe crab eggs in the Delaware Bay fuel the little bird's epic journey to the Arctic...but recently, their numbers have started to crash. The story of the red knot and the horseshoe crab is a living example of how every species, no matter how big or small, is important.
