Description: Almost 175 years ago, the first primitive railroad penetrated the portion of New Jersey known as the Pine Barrens. The Delaware & Atlantic extended its tracks from Brown's Point, Kinkora, to New Lisbon for shipping cordwood and Hanover Furnace goods. Railroad promoters projected many other lines into and through the woods, but the Camden & Atlantic Railroad did not construct its route until the early 1850s. The Raritan & Delaware Bay Railroad followed soon thereafter, laying the rails that would become known as the Trail of the Blue Comet during the twentieth century. Other routes followed in the second half of the nineteenth century. Did the entrepreneurs who built these railroads achieve their objectives? What impact did the railroads have on the Pine Barrens, its industries, and its residents? Historian Paul W. Schopp will explore these questions and others as he explains the history of railroading in the Pines.
