Join Dr. Dennis Gray of the Rutgers Pineland Field Station as he discusses how atmospheric deposition and Pine Barrens stream inputs influence the Barnegat Bay Ecosystem. He will also give an overview of essential plant nutrients and ecosystem health, and the influence of human caused nutrient enrichment to native plant and animal species. 12:30pm. Cattus Island County Park is very close to two other open space gems, the Reedy Creek Unit of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge and Tilton Point. Tilton Point is an open area that was purchased by the State of New Jersey and Ocean County Natural Land Trusts. Dr. Jay Kelly, Instructor of Biology and Environmental Science at Raritan Valley Community College, will discuss the rare and endangered flora of New Jersey. The talk will focus on the flora from the Pine Barrens, streams, marshes and shores of the Barnegat Bay Watershed to illustrate the larger issues of rare plant species conservation in the Garden State.

The Barnegat Bay/Little Egg Harbor (BB/LEH) estuary is suffering from eutrophication issues due to the over-enrichment of nutrients from watershed sources as well as atmospheric sources. This talk will focus on what individuals and policy-makers can do to reverse the degradation.
