Exertion: easy to moderate. Hike a nature trail through a variety of habitats such as a white cedar swamp, pine plantation, and a pine barrens lake community as we discover the plants and animals unique to this natural area. The hike will be about 5 miles at a pace of approx. 3 mph (moderate pace).

"Pinelands 101: An Introduction to the natural and cultural resources of New Jersey's Pinelands" is the first program of our 2010 "Twilight in Bass River State Forest" evening program series. "Pinelands 101" is being presented by Joel Mott of the NJ Pinelands Commission on June 5, 2010 at 8:00 p.m.
This free, hour-long family program will discuss why and how the NJ Pinelands Commission protects these important resources. The program is being held at the Lake Absegami Beach Complex, Bass River State Forest. Please bring something to sit on. Heavy rain cancels.

"Find Your Happy Place" by volunteering at Bass River State Forest's National Trails Day volunteer event.
Join Bass River State Forest staff and volunteers on Sunday, June 6 to celebrate the 18th Annual National Trails Day by improving trails at New Jersey's First State Forest.
This year's theme "Find Your Happy Place" reminds people that some of our favorite places are outdoors in local parks and forests and that it's good to "give back" to keep them clean and usable. Projects include marking trails, trimming trails, cleaning exhibit panels, cleaning up around the Civilian Conservation Corps camp trail and other projects.
Meet at the Forest Office at 9:00 a.m. Bring work gloves, water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Snacks will be provided during the event and hot dogs will be served at the end at 1:00 p.m.
This is a great project for scouts and other students to get community service credit.

Celebrate National Trails Day 2011 by volunteering at Bass River State Forest
Bass River Twp. - During this International Year of Forests, join Bass River State Forest staff and volunteers on Sunday, June 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to celebrate the American Hiking Society's 19th Annual National Trails Day by improving trails at New Jersey's First State Forest.
Our earth is made up of natural ingredients like rivers, mountains, lakes, deserts, and plains and National Trails Day is a time to get outside and celebrate those natural surroundings. The theme for National Trails Day 2011, "Made With All Natural Ingredients", encourages all Americans to get outside, connect with local outdoor clubs, businesses, community groups, and parks and recreation departments as well as federal land managing agencies to experience, appreciate and celebrate the natural places where we can find a spread of scenery, a plateful of peace, and a heap of happiness and health.
Projects include marking trails, trimming trails, cleaning exhibit panels, cleaning up around the Civilian Conservation Corps camp trail and other projects.
Meet at the Forest Office at 9:00 a.m. Bring work gloves, water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Snacks will be provided during the event and hot dogs will be served at the end of the project at 1:00 p.m.
This is a great project for scouts and students to get community service credit.

Lake Absegami Beach Complex
Volunteer naturalist Michele Cooklin is leading a free moonlight hike on Saturday, July 9. Meet at the Lake Absegami Beach Complex by 8:15 p.m. for this two-mile hike on flat terrain.
Learn about the affects of fire on the forest, the significance of cedar swamps and listen for wildlife of the night. The hike should conclude by 9:45 p.m.
This program is available to the first 25 people who register at the Forest Office. Participants should be over the age of 7 and wear shoes or hiking boots. Insect repellent and flashlight is suggested.

If there is snow the roads are plowed so we should be able to get 5 miles in. In parking lot in front of the office. Lunch is near end of hike so bring a snack for the trail
