"The Wharton Homes of the Guilded Age"
Wealthy industrialists of the late nineteenth century created opulent
homes and estates to reflect their power and position. Most people familiar with
Batsto Village know that Joseph Wharton remodeled the big house at the village
of Batsto into the mansion we know today. Lesser known are two other estates he
created around the same time. Ontalauna, completed in 1880, was the family's
"headquarters" in suburban Philadelphia while Marbella, in Jamestown, Rhode
Island provided a summertime retreat. These three impressive homes will be
discussed utilizing historic and present day photographs, as well as recollections
of the Wharton Family. Tours of the mansion will follow.

"The music that we have created has been composed to bring healing, celebration and peace to all of humanity and to continue the compassion of our great heritage. My grandfather James F. Still taught me three major chords and told me once I learned these chords on the piano I would be able to play anything. I will carry my grandfather's legacy through my musical career." Bryant Hicks

DIRECTIONS: Our area of Pleasant Mills and Sweetwater and Batsto took some hard hits from IRENE. As you think about going to Batsto, please keep the following in mind:
1. CURRENTLY - RT 542 is closed to thru traffic from Batsto Church to Batsto Village. The bridge has flooded and may be compromised. No word on that as yet.
2. INDEFINITELY - Pleasant Mills Road is closed to thru traffic from Rt 542/Nesco Road to Jackson Road. The road has caved-in along the lake and across from the Old Mill.
If Rt 542 remains closed in that area, those coming from Hammonton will have to bear right onto Jackson Road off of Nesco Road/Rt 542... turn left onto RT 563... northbound, going over the Green Bank Bridge to County Route 542. Turn left onto Route 542 and proceed 4.1 miles to Batsto Road and turn right.
With the current detour, it will add about 20 minutes to your drive.
