Pine Barrens upland soil is sandy, sometimes gravelly, porous, acidic and does not retain enough moisture for most crops. Only in fringe areas, sometimes called the "shatterbelt" of the Pine Barrens, is the soil naturally suitable for traditional farming, enabling commercial vegetable, grain and fruit farms to develop and thrive. The Franklin Parker Preserve, New Jersey Conservation Foundation's largest preserve, is known mostly for its history of cranberry cultivation, but there are also some huge, previously cultivated blueberry fields. Many of these areas continue to produce big, delicious blueberries! Come out for an "all you can pick" experience. Meet at the North Gate (Lake Entrance). We will carpool and caravan from there. Bring plenty of beverages. Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and a hat so you don't expose too much skin to the bugs. Trip leader: Russell Juelg, Land Steward-Pine Barrens Education. $5 per person to be paid in advance through carol@njconservation.org
