Brendan Byrne State Forest Ranger Station
A pretty hike with varied terrain: Pakim (Native American for Cranberry) Pond; a cedar swamp, reservoirs and cranberry bogs. Hiking is mostly on sand roads and the Batona Trail, with perhaps a surprise or two.9 miles, moderate pace. Probably dry. No planned bushwhacking. Normal stops. Meeting at Byrne Ranger Station. Hike from the Ranger Station to Deep Hollow Pond and on to Ong's Hat along the Batona Trail. 11 miles, moderate pace. Lunch at Cafe Apany (formerly Anapa's) is part of this hike. Those wishing to bring their own lunch are welcome, but need to recognize that our hike will not resume until the lunch at Cafe Apany has been concluded ; or they can elect to finish the hike on their own if they choose. Return to Ranger Station by same route. Meet at Byrne Office parking lot. Bad weather cancels.

5-6 miles, moderate paced walk in Brendan Byrne SF- Four legged hikers on leash will be provided with trail food by leader. Others fend for themselves. Only one short snack break along the way as we will be back in time for lunch at the pond. No weather cancels so dress for the weather. If the opportunity presents we go in snow. Meet at Pakim Pond in Brendan Byrne SF.

Brendan Byrne State Forest office - 1 mile East on Route 70 from the Route 70 and 72 circle
A field trip with the Gloucester County Nature Club
Plants of the Pine Barrens, Saturday, Sept. 24, 9 a.m. to mid-afternoon, Brendan Byrne State Forest - Route 70 East, Woodland Township.
Visit several plant communities of the Pine Barrens, including cedar swamps and upland pine and oak forest. The focus will be on woody plants and forest associations, but will include a look at some late-blooming wildflowers. If time permits, a brief botanical foray to Whitesbog will be included. This will be a joint trip with the Rancocas Nature Center.
Meet at the Brendan Byrne State Forest office - 1 mile East on Route 70 from the Route 70 and 72 circle, look for a Brendan Byrne State Forest sign on the right. Turn in and go a short distance to the office.
Bring binoculars, lunch, beverage. Have sufficient fuel in your car to drive about 20 miles during the day, some of it on unpaved roads. For additional information, call 856-845-7075.

Meet at the parking lot at the State Forst office. You can access it from either route 70 or 72 from Four Mile Circle.
If you're not a polar bear or musk ox, the tundra of northern Canada is a very inhospitable place in February. Join Faye and me as we search the recesses of Brendan Byrne State Forest and try to find the migratory Canadian hogs in their winter abode. We should cover about 8-10 miles at a moderate pace (3mph). Cranberry Jaunt Hike, 6 miles, moderate pace. Hike a loop around Lebanon Lakes Area and the various scenic cranberry bogs. Explore the area and learn about the bogs. Bring binoculars for possible waterfoul sightings. Bring easy to carry picnic lunch to enjoy at halfway point. It is recommended to bring a plastic bag to sit on. Directions: From 70/72 circle, follow Rt 70 East 1.7 miles. Turn right onto Forest Road at the traffic light. Go 1.1 miles and turn right into large sandy parking area. Look for OCSJ sign and group.
