South Jersey Land and Water Trust staff member Michael Hogan will guide a 2 hour tour. The Sahara Sands site is located at the White Oak Branch of the Great Egg Harbor River, along Jackson Road. The large sand quarry was originally purchased by the state of New Jersey for an ATV track, but after much public opposition, was turned over to the NJ Division of Fish and Game for a Wildlife Management Area. The site contains a large lake, small ponds, open and forested wetlands, and pine oak uplands. It has a rich diversity of Pinelands flora and fauna. NJ designated threatened and endangered species found there include the barred owl, Pine Barrens tree frog and the floating heart, a rare aquatic gentian. Bald eagles are also a frequent visitor. Michael will identify the area's flora and fauna and discuss SJLWT projects in the South Jersey including its current stream assessment and vernal pool programs. The trail may be muddy, please wear appropriate foot wear and dress warm, it may be windy at this open location. Sahara Sands is located on Jackson Road approximately 3/4 mile south of Piney Hollow Road. Free for members, $3 non-members. Please RSVP.

Join us on a guided hike to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Penn State Forest on April 25 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Meet at Penn State Forest's Lake Oswego parking lot/boat access on Jenkins/Lake Oswego Road off of County Route 563. A map is available on the Penn State Forest web page at www.njparksandforests.org. We'll be celebrating both the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and the anniversary of the forest with cake after the hike.
Volunteers from the Outdoor Club of South Jersey and Bass River State Forest will lead the 5-mile hike. There will be stops at the former Civilian Conservation Corps Camp S-60, Bear Swamp Hill (165 ft high), where we will look for the historic remains of the plane that hit the fire tower back in 1970, and Penn Place, a forgotten town of the Pine Barrens. The hike should take approximately 2 to 2 ½ hours. If you prefer a shorter hike you can walk to the CCC Camp and Penn Place Road and a volunteer will guide you back to the parking lot.
Penn State Forest began as the Penn Reserve when the State of New Jersey purchased 2,764 acres of land from the Pue family on February 11, 1910. This was the fifth acquisition for New Jersey's new "park" system. The Civilian Conservation Corps built a camp and made improvements at the area from the 1930s to the early 1940s. The forest used to have a bathhouse and pavilion on the shore of 90-acre Lake Oswego but those buildings no longer remain and swimming is no longer permitted. Penn State Forest is now 3,366 acres that provides boating access, picnic area, passive recreation, hunting and fishing.
Bring something to drink, sunscreen and insect repellent. Heavy rain cancels.

Atsion Ranger Station
Speakers: Rob Auermuller, Superintendent, Wharton State Forest; Barbara Solem, author
Location: Atsion Mansion, Atsion Ranger Station
Description: In 1766 Charles Reed erected an ironworks at Atsion that operated successfully for a number of years. Atsion was an important industrial center during those early years, even making iron products that were used to support the revolutionary war effort. The village grew and by the early 19th century 700 people lived in the town. After the iron industry failed in the mid-1800s, a paper mill was built at Atsion that eventually operated as a cotton mill and later as a cranberry packing and sorting house. Come and learn about the history of this fascinating ghost town as you do a walking tour of the old village. For those interested, Barbara Solem (author of Ghost Towns and Other Quirky Places in the New Jersey Pine Barrens) will offer a tour of the village after the mansion tour.

10am. 5 miles, easy pace. This is Atlantic County Park System's most popular park and covers about 1,700 acres. After the Native Americans, this was land owned by the Estell family and was the site of a glassworks in the 1800's, then became the site of the Bethlehem Loading Co. - a munitions plant during World War I. After 70 years, the forest has reclaimed this area, and is now home to an incredible diversity of plants and animals. Bring lunch and beverage. This is a nice family outing. Leashed dogs welcome. Meet at the Warren E. Fox Nature Center.
