On April 17th, the LBIF concludes its 2010 Science Saturdays program with an introduction to Project Terrapin, a new venture between the LBIF, the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Sciences (MATES), and Drexel University. MATES Supervisor and Project Terrapin Coordinator, John Wnek, will lead the group in a discussion of basic terrapin biology and explain how the hatchery project evolved.
Many of the local terrapin nesting areas have been developed and impacted, leaving female terrapins to dig nests in our front yards and driveways where they're prone to predation or cannot incubate well. Project Terrapin aims to transport eggs to the moisture- and temperature-controlled hatchery, ensuring proper incubation and protection.
Attendees will also learn how they can get involved. This includes participation in future training sessions, promoting conservation, and increasing awareness. Come learn about these extraordinary creatures in our own backyards and discover how you can do some hands-on work to help preserve their future.
For more information contact the LBIF at (609) 494-1241 or visit the LBIF Science Committee's website at www.LBIFScience.org. "The Wharton Homes of the Guilded Age"
Wealthy industrialists of the late nineteenth century created opulent
homes and estates to reflect their power and position. Most people familiar with
Batsto Village know that Joseph Wharton remodeled the big house at the village
of Batsto into the mansion we know today. Lesser known are two other estates he
created around the same time. Ontalauna, completed in 1880, was the family's
"headquarters" in suburban Philadelphia while Marbella, in Jamestown, Rhode
Island provided a summertime retreat. These three impressive homes will be
discussed utilizing historic and present day photographs, as well as recollections
of the Wharton Family. Tours of the mansion will follow.

Drew Becher, President, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, at Medford Leas
On Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 11:00 AM, Drew Becher, President, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, will be the guest speaker at the Lewis W. Barton Arboretum Lecture at Medford Leas.
Drew's topic,"Making Philadelphia the Greenest City in the Country",will highlight ways that PHS programs add to the life of Philadelphia.
PHS, the nation's first horticultural society, founded in 1827, motivates and inspires people to improve the quality of life and transform their communities through horticulture. PHS's signature initiatives - Philadelphia Green, Philadelphia International Flower Show and Meadowbrook Farm - uphold a tradition of quality horticulture, sustainable community development, as well as floral and landscape design that inspires gardeners throughout the nation.
This year, PHS programs will provide thousands of underserved city residents with more than 20,000 pounds of fresh produce through the City Harvest program. In addition, PHS will launch TreeVitalize 2020, an initiative to expand the tree canopy across the region, in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware, with the planting of one million trees.
In addition, as producer of the world's largest indoor Flower Show, PHS will continue to bring together the finest floral and landscape designers with a vision to become the world's most influential horticultural event.
Drew will also give an overview of his work leading up to being named PHS president. Please join us in welcoming Drew to the horticulture community in South Jersey.
Light luncheon fare and tours of the Lewis W. Barton Arboretum will follow the lecture. Medford Leas is pleased to welcome you to this special spring event to be held in the Theater at no charge.
Reservations for the program are appreciated. Please phone 609-654-3527 to confirm your attendance.

Michele N. Siekerka, Esq. who is the Assistant Commissioner for Economic Growth and Green Energy at the Department of Environmental Protection will speak at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies, NJ. She will discuss how DEP is advancing sustainability initiatives for the future of our shore communities. "It is important that DEP be seen as an advocate, not an impediment, to sustainable growth at the shore," says Siekerka.
Speaking at 7 pm, Assistant Commissioner Siekerka is coming to the LBI Foundation as part of the Barnegat Bay Day & Go Green Expo two day event-an issue of importance to the LBI community is presented at a gathering open to the public the evening before the actual Barnegat Bay Day which is a celebration of the Bay and environmentally friendly living for adults and children of all ages. It is held from 12 noon to 4 pm at the LBI Foundation on July 7th.
Prior to joining the Department of Environmental Protection as its first Assistant Commissioner for Economic Growth and Green Energy, an office newly established by DEP Commissioner Bob Martin, Michele Sierkerka was president and CEO of the Mercer Regional Chamber of Commerce. Commissioner Martin's vision statement for the Department recognizes that a healthy environment and healthy economy go hand and hand. Siekerka's experience with New Jersey's business community coupled with her legal background provide the foundation for understanding the economic impact of regulatory processes, especially for small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Siekerka's new role is designed to work with all stakeholders- residents, local governments, environmental organizations and businesses and industry- to identify and create opportunities for economic growth while maintaining the highest standards of protection for the environment. She is the DEP's point person to help New Jersey tap the full potential of renewable energy by coordinating efforts with other state agencies and working to help businesses develop more opportunities for wind and solar power.
Learning about the DEP's proactive stand on sustainability at the shore will be both enlightening and new. The community is welcome to attend at no charge. For more information about Michele Siekerka's talk or about Barnegat Bay Day or for directions to the LBI Foundation, call 609-494-1241.

Runs through Sunday, October 2nd, 2011
The 100th Anniversary of the publication of The Plants of Southern New Jersey by Witmer Stone will be celebrated with a three day event beginning September 30 in Medford, New Jersey.
The gathering will also recognize Catoxen Cabin, built in 1889 by Stone's friends and fellow naturalists as base camp for their nature studies. The cabin is still in use today at Camp Dark Waters.
Several environmental organizations have come together to plan the weekend, which will kick off on Friday evening at Medford Leas retirement community with a dinner and introductory talk about the great naturalists that preceded Stone. Saturday will feature presentations about Stone and his work, linking today's plants, birds, insects and habitats to those he researched and reported. At mid-afternoon, attendees will adjourn to Camp Dark Waters to visit Catoxen Cabin and engage in the natural science pursuits Stone and his colleagues would have enjoyed there so long ago. The day will conclude with a rustic dinner and music around the campfire.
Field trips "in the footsteps of Stone" will be offered on Sunday, including botanical and avian car caravans. The presenters and field trip leaders are all respected naturalists, scientists and historians well versed in Stone's writings.
Witmer Stone (1866-1939) was a giant among naturalists. He was both the last of the Victorian gentlemen scientists and the first of the professional natural scientists. After earning a Sc.D. at Penn, he spent his entire career at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, starting as Jessup Fund Student and ending as Emeritus Director and Vice President 51 years later.
Stone's many accomplishments flowed from his profound interest in nature. He wrote three publications that are still valued by naturalists today, Bird Studies at Old Cape May, the Mammals of New Jersey, and The Plants of Southern New Jersey, as well as numerous papers and monographs. He was a member and officer of many national and international scientific organizations.
The cost of the complete Witmer Stone Weekend is $75, although registrations may be made for Saturday only at $45. The weekend schedule and downloadable registration forms may be found on line at www.witmerstoneweekend.com. Description: Almost 175 years ago, the first primitive railroad penetrated the portion of New Jersey known as the Pine Barrens. The Delaware & Atlantic extended its tracks from Brown's Point, Kinkora, to New Lisbon for shipping cordwood and Hanover Furnace goods. Railroad promoters projected many other lines into and through the woods, but the Camden & Atlantic Railroad did not construct its route until the early 1850s. The Raritan & Delaware Bay Railroad followed soon thereafter, laying the rails that would become known as the Trail of the Blue Comet during the twentieth century. Other routes followed in the second half of the nineteenth century. Did the entrepreneurs who built these railroads achieve their objectives? What impact did the railroads have on the Pine Barrens, its industries, and its residents?
Speaker: Historian Paul W. Schopp will explore these questions and others as he explains the history of railroading in the Pines.

Description: This program provides a natural science-based overview of man's use of Pinelands forest resources. For over 400-years, this great wilderness provided the raw materials needed for America's rapid industrialization. Vast stands of Atlantic whitecedar were over-exploited to sheath growing cities. Before fossil fuels, carbon stores were tied up in tree stock. Pines and oaks were coal mines, which provided the combustibles needed to support local manufacture. Pines were oil wells, tapped for their petroleum-like gum turpentine that furnished naval stores for shipyards, and other gum by-products. Additional tree-based goods included lumber, medicines, and other more unusual output like tessels, bird-lime, and hoop-poles.
Speaker: Mark Demitroff is a PhD Geography student at the University of Delaware, and a native to the Pine Barrens. He is by trade a tree expert and geomorphologist, and loves to revel in local history with his colleagues at the West Jersey Historical Round Table.
